I had read the “Jman28 Well” thread on Twoplustwo.com about five years ago, then saw it was bumped just recently so I read the whole thing over again. If you don’t know who Phil Galfond is, he’s only one of the best players in the world. He’s won millions beating up on high-stakes online cash game regulars under the screen name OMGClayAiken. His posts on Twoplustwo get highly-deserved accolades for his easy-to-follow logic and writing style.
The best thing about Galfond, though, (at least for us) is his honesty. There are people who may have similar skill sets as him, but they do not choose to answer questions so forthrightly as Galfond chooses to do. They don’t share what Galfond shares, with regards to his thought process, his opinions, his challenges, etc. Phil Ivey may be recognized as a better player, but you will never hear Ivey talk about his choices or his thought processes. And that is definitely not a knock on Ivey; I would probably take Ivey’s approach myself if I was in his shoes. But it’s a great boon for aspiring poker players to have someone like Galfond who is willing to go out of his way to educate and answer questions.
This classic Twoplustwo thread is a case-in-point; Phil answers many questions that you may have wondered about successful high stakes poker players. And he does it all with an honesty and a humility that will earn your respect. You will also learn a hell of a lot about the thought process of a high stakes pro, and you’ll learn how much psychology plays a role in great poker. (For me personally, this thread, when I first read it several years ago, helped me realize how far outclassed I was at the very fundamentals of the game.) Well worth the couple hours you’ll spend reading the whole thing.
If you like his posts, Galfond’s got plenty more posts in the high stakes no-limit section of Twoplustwo.com. He also has a blog: http://www.bluefirepoker.com/blogs/featured/philgalfond
