On a recent People Who Read People podcast episode, I interviewed Brandon Sheils, a pro poker player who recently did a study on poker tells as part of his getting a Masters in Psychology. Brandon is a pro poker player and coach. You can see Brandon’s poker-focused YouTube channel here and his Twitter @brandonsheils here.
I was interested to interview Brandon because I had helped him out a bit with his study. We brainstormed some of the behaviors to look for, and the general approach of the study. Topics discussed in our talk include: the challenges of studying poker tells; how he set up his study and the reasons behind the structure; what the results were; the meaning of something being “not statistically significant”; speculations on what AI and machine learning might hold for the analysis of poker tells; some times Brandon has used opponent behavior in poker hands.
